Overcoming Internet Challenges for RFID Applications

In today’s digital economy, rural businesses—especially those in agriculture, manufacturing, and logistics—are increasingly turning to cloud-based RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) systems to track inventory, manage operations, and improve efficiency. These technologies are revolutionizing how rural industries operate, offering real-time data, better visibility, and integration with modern supply chains. However, the full benefits of cloud-based RFID can only be optimized with one crucial component: reliable internet infrastructure…and it is easier than ever to overcome gaps in service in rural geographies.

Cloud-based RFID solutions rely on consistent and fast internet access to sync data between remote readers, mobile devices, and centralized cloud systems. Without stable connectivity, businesses may face data lags, failed uploads, and system downtime—all of which can disrupt operations and diminish the value of RFID investments. While coverage may vary, mobile hotspots and dedicated data plans from providers like Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T can offer surprisingly robust connections, especially in areas with decent cellular infrastructure. In recent years, as providers upgrade to 5G and beyond, there has been major shifts in coverage — so check with your providers and compare your pricing and coverage. We often see that even though one provider was the gold standard in one geography, in recent years, they may have fallen behind as they compete for new customers and upgrade towers e.g. it is incredible to hear that T-Mobile has reported download speeds of 6.3 Gbps in some markets!

For more remote regions, Starlink by SpaceX has emerged as a game-changer. Starlink delivers high-speed satellite internet with relatively low latency, making it viable for cloud applications like RFID. Its growing network of low-earth-orbit satellites is specifically designed to serve rural and underserved communities. Many rural businesses that previously had no viable internet options are now able to run cloud-based tools thanks to Starlink, including their mobile station Starlink Roam which starts at only $50/mo.

Additionally, USDA programs such as the Broadband ReConnect Loan and Grant Program provide funding to build or improve broadband infrastructure in rural America. These programs support internet service providers and co-ops in extending high-speed internet to farms and businesses in need. Some initiatives also offer financial support directly to businesses to help them afford the necessary connectivity upgrades. Many fiber line providers are happy to run new lines to additional builders as well for little cost, and that cost may be eligible for USDA grant reimbursement.

By leveraging these solutions, rural businesses don’t have to wait for traditional broadband to catch up. They can implement cloud-based RFID now—boosting operational efficiency, improving inventory accuracy, and staying competitive in a rapidly digitizing world.
